New Tea

Bob has shipments of new and special tea coming into the store in a steady stream these days – some of these sell out very fast to our savvy web customers, so don’t miss out on any of these unusual and delicious offerings. Here are three teas to pay particular attention to:

Assam Satrupa Kama Black
This estate is located in the uppermost section of the Assam region of India close to the Burmese border. Kama is a huge leaf, with a big, juicy, vigorous flavor and the bracing strength of Assam leaf. Made by the traditional Orthodox method, this leaf is long, twisted and a beautiful grey/black color. This family owned tea garden is in the region where wild growing tea was first discovered by Major Robert Bruce in 1823. This discovery led the English to establish the first cultivated tea gardens in India here in Assam years later.

Connoisseur Teas

Da Hong Pao Royal Red Robe Wuyi Cliff Tea
Fujian Province in eastern China is home to extraordinary Wulong (oolong) teas. Chinese legends pay homage to the reputation of these most revered teas, which were once enjoyed only by the Celestial Emperor. Grown in a mountainous region famous for rocky cliffs and dramatic, rugged terrain, Da Hong Pao is cultivated in a few gardens from plants propagated from the original ancient tea bushes. Daoist priests tend the ancient bushes and pick less than one pound of tea a year, which they obligingly send to Beijing.

 4 oz - $15.00

8 oz - $30.00

16 oz - $60.00

Bamboo Tips
Grown in Sichuan Province near Mending Mt, this tea is as close to perfection as tea can be. This is a ‘bud-only’ (sometimes called a ‘sparrow’s tongue‘) yellow tea  that is meticulously picked in early spring and sorted by hand one bud at a time. Mending Mt is revered in China as being the birthplace of cultivated tea and tea culture in China. Bamboo Tips are named for the lush, dense bamboo forests in the area, and the habit of the bamboo plant to emerge in spring by sending up just the tiniest pale green shoots. On Mending Mt we had to ride a cable car up the mountain, hike a mile uphill and wait half an hour to taste this rare tea..…you can enjoy it much more easily!

Moroccan Clay Cooking Tagines

After much searching, we now stock authentic Moroccan Tagines in two styles. These are traditional cooking tagines and not the purely decorative tagines that seem to be everywhere.

Rifi… is the preferred tagine of northern Morocco and southern Spain. Unglazed and hand-shaped. Rifi can be used on top of the stove (low heat)or in a slow oven (300°F.) Rifi is also charming on a countertop as a rustic, decorative kitchen accent.

$59.00

Tangier… is glazed for easy cleaning and has a steam release opening. (The Rifi Tagine does not need the steam release opening, as the clay is porous.)

$69.00

Tagines must be seasoned before use (instructions available) and for best care should be hand-washed.

             Salad Spinners (that work!)
Zyliss has a new design for their venerable salad spinners and a new lime green color to boot. Famous for their cord-pull spinners (which are un-matched for ease of use and for obtaining really dry lettuce) these spinners now have a re-tractable handle and a flat top, making them easier to store.

Muddlers, Shakers & Ice Bags with a Hammer

Hard-to-find-necessities for crafting exceptional cocktails. A Capirhina tastes much fresher when the lime is properly muddled, and Margaritas benefit from a brief icy shaking. An Ice Bag with Hammer is vital for reducing ice cubes into civilized, drink-chilling-sized pieces.

Balsamic Glaze, Modena Italy

A thick, syrupy glaze with the familiar sweet-sour flavor of balsamic vinegar. Keep a bottle handy to drizzle over grilled vegetables, pan-seared pork chops, shrimp scampi, fresh strawberries, garden fresh tomatoes or sweet corn.

Italian Truffle Salt

When Amanda Hesser recently gave a glowing review in the New York Times to Italy’s latest export, Italian truffle salt from the Abruzzi, our web site was flooded with orders. While we were not mentioned in her story, due to the fact that we have been selling this salt for a while now, we come up right at the top of the Google listings.

Thanks to the search engines, customers found us, whether they were looking for a local, small-store vendor of this great truffle salt or wanting to mail order it.
Don’t dally….the word is out.

• Texas on a Plate

This Fredericksburg, Texas company is little known in the East, but they make delicious and impeccably well-made BBQ and grill sauces. Texans know that good BBQ is about the goodness of the meat as well as the sauce, so accordingly, these products are neither corn syrup sweet nor thrill-seeking-show-off-hot. Skillfully blended using a variety of fresh chiles, these sauces are not sharp and vinegary, so you can sneak them into all sorts of dishes to add a little zip. For ‘just right’ flavors that compliment grilled meat or chicken without overwhelming them, put on your cowboy hat, grab your grill brush and head outdoors. Choose from:

Ancho Chile & Honey Sauce
Pasilla de Oaxaca Chile Sauce
Chipotle Chile Ketchup

Vic Firth pepper and salt mills

For some time now, customers who have these peppermills kept telling us that we should sell them because they swear by them. OK, so we looked into them and sure enough, we fell in love with the gorgeous colors and the sensuous feel and designs of these slightly oversized wooden tools. And who could have an argument with this? The mills are fully adjustable, have a locking feature that keeps the grind selection set where you set it, and they have a lifetime warranty on the grinding mechanism. From soft Nile green and the barest hint of lemon yellow to my favorites, the sunset orange and dark earth green, these mills make you happy just looking at them. I hear that using them is even better.

• Sardines In Olive Oil from Spain

When I started looking for Mediterranean sardines years ago, I had no idea that they would be so hard to find. None of my vendors had any, and when I asked why not, they just looked at me and shrugged. Over fishing, some said. The Europeans eat them all, said others. So, you can imagine my delight when I recently discovered these tender and delicious sardines from Spain. Plump and silvery, they really dress up an antipasto platter. I like to wrap them in a piece of roasted piquillo pepper and serve with very cold Spanish cava.
