Direct
from Kyoto, Japan, these hand-made pottery pieces are
stunning and unique. Following a tradition established
centuries ago, Kiyomisu pottery reflects a distinctive
artistic style found in eastern Kyoto. Ceramic potters
began creating Kiyomizu-yaki pottery in the vicinity of
Kiyomizu Temple in the 16th century. The arrival of
Japan's Edo Period (1603-1867) elevated the refinement
of the fine arts which flourished in classical Japan.
Kiyomizu-yaki pottery has an elegant style and flair
which is attributed to the fact that Kyoto was once home
to the Japanese Imperial Court. Today potters continue
to ply their craft in villages outside of the eastern
edge of the city of Kyoto and sell their wares to the
ceramics shops that line the streets leading up to the
temple.
