Tanzania Usambara is a great example of the new
cultivars being perfected in the modern tea-growing
regions of Africa. Using the now-standard (for
large-scale production) C.T.C. manufacture as its
form, Usambara is a delicious, malty cup of tea. It is
in the general style of a high-quality Assam C.T.C.,
due to its provenance and origin, but it has a unique
flavor profile that reveals its terroir.
Distinctive for both its clarity and fruitiness,
Usambara shows clear differences from its origin bush
– the Assam bush teas of northeastern India. The
bushes used for the Usambara gardens are young Assam
bush plant stock grafted onto Kenya bush
root stock – this combination yields a
‘Tanzania bush’ that has elements of both of its
predecessors, but delivers its unique flavor profile.
Chosen both as a refreshing change-of-pace by
steadfast Assam tea drinkers and as a tea-of-choice
for big-flavor tea drinkers, Usambara is reliable,
consistent and delicious. Flexible as to whether drunk
straight or with sweetener or dairy added, Usambara is
easy to prepare.
Use 1 teaspoon (2-3 grams) per 6 oz of water
Steep 1 infusion at 3 - 5 minutes.
Water temperature should be 195˚ - 205˚ F |
