Genmai Cha
can be comprised of sencha leaf or bancha leaf (
leaves plucked from the lower branches of the tea
bushes and hence stronger in flavor ) combined with
whole and popped kernels of rice.
Some call this tea 'Popcorn Rice' because of it's
appearance but the toasted grain added to the tea is
rice and not corn.
Our Genmai Cha is made from a blend of sencha and
bancha from the spring season. This gives our Genmai
Cha a snappy, rich taste.
Genmai Cha is extremely popular in Japan; even older
children are allowed a bit each day, as the volume of
rice in the tea mixture inevitably reduces the
caffeine content. Genmai Cha, along with Hojicha
(toasted leaf tea), is a daily drink for many in
Japan.
With its lovely toasty, nutty flavor, Genmai Cha is
warm and satisfying. It should never be harsh or
grassy, as it is the quality of the sencha that
determines the basic flavor of the Genmai Cha.
Good Genmai Chai has a sweet, lingering flavor that
quenches thirst and warms the spirit. It is good drunk
in hot or cold weather, but is especially welcome in
Japan's cold, damp winter months.
Genmai Cha is an excellent tea for anyone who loves
drinking both coffee and tea or who is making the
transition from coffee to tea.
Because of the inclusion of the toasted rice, Genmai
Cha can be infused at a bit hotter temperature than
other Japanese teas. When steeped a short time, a
second infusion can often be made.
Use 1 Tablespoon (2-3 grams) per
6 oz of water
Steep 1-2 infusions at 2 minutes
each.
Water temperature should be 175˚ - 185˚ F |
