After being re-hydrated
during brewing, the individual leaves that comprise
this special tea resemble melon seeds of a uniform
size and color. The Chinese call melon seeds gua pian,
and believe that anything related to the squash family
is lucky, fortuitous, and promotes fertility.
Lu Shan Gua Pian is grown in an isolated area on the
rugged slopes of the Lu’An Mountains of Anhui
Province, northwest of the Huang Shan. The garden
where this tea is grown is protected by a bamboo grove
that serves as the margin of its contour.
This is a very difficult tea to manufacture. It must
be plucked very carefully, because it is the single
first true leaf below the budset. This leaf is
treasured for its concentration of flavor and lack of
extraneous moisture.
This tea is usually quite nice, but this year’s crop
is extraordinary.
We have tasted hundreds of green teas over the last 15
years, and this year’s Gua Pian is one of the finest
spring Green teas that we have ever tasted.
Steep 2-3 infusions at 2 minutes
each.
Water temperature should be 160˚ - 170˚ F |
