Houryu employs a technique that first adds a thin layer of wet clay to the body and the lid the teapot. After it drys a bit he runs a tool over the surface of the clay to create an effect that is reminiscent of the appearance of gently weathered wood. The presence of a thin line of red around the rim of the teapot is an elegant touch, and typical of the attention to details that Tokoname potters lavish on their teapots.
