Occasionally Japanese teapot handles are placed so that
they arc over the opening of the teapot. These are called
dobin-style teapots. Usually such handles are
made of simple lengths of compressed bamboo, but Jinshu
has fashioned a handle from a natural piece of twig and
vine to complement his handmade teapot.
This teapot has a fine-textured, matte or sueded finish
that is smooth but pleasantly rough at the same time. This
finish is a natural finish or effect that was created in
his wood burning kiln. The artist achieved this finish by
the placement of his teapots in
relation to the heat and flame inside of his kiln.
The teapot lid and body have a warm brown tone that is
accentuated with a slight metallic shimmer. A delicate
swirl of light pink-to-apricot color trails around the
middle of the teapot. This teapot radiates a strong yet
soft presence, and it is a lovely marriage of traditional
design with contemporary interpretation: the results are
unique each time Jinshu fires a teapot and cannot be
duplicated exactly from teapot to teapot.
