Japanese
Clay Teapots
-
Kokudei Katto Teapot
Tokoname has a long history and respected tradition of
producing high-quality Japanese ceramic wares. Japan has
six ancient areas of pottery - Bizen, Echizen, Seto,
Shigaraki, Tanba, and Tokoname. From the beginning of the
Edo period until today, Tokoname has played an important
role as a leading kiln site, and the town became famous
during the 1800's for red clay teapots. Today, the kilns
at Tokoname still produce well-balanced, thin-walled,
small, side-handled earthenware kyusu teapots that exude
fine detail and a contemporary aesthetic. The present day
artists of Tokoname are divided into four groups, the
Japan Traditional School, the Japan Art Exhibition School,
the Craftsman School and the Modern Art School Production
of sculptural pottery. This unglazed, honeycomb patterned
teapot is a prime example of form and function, balance
and grace.
