Join us on a cultural
journey though China on
Viking River Cruises
It is no secret to anyone who knows us that we love
traveling in China. The people, the food, the culture, the
history, the splendid landscapes, the crafts - and the tea.
The complexities of China could fuel a lifetime of trips
in order to fully understand and appreciate this ancient and
captivating culture.
While all of our previous trips to China have been rugged
and challenging trips into the hinterlands to source tea
in remote tea villages, we fell that it was time for us to
see the China that we have missed.
So, this time we go as informed and seasoned China travelers, and would like
to take a small group of like-minded adventurers with us.
We have selected Viking River Cruises to host our group
(limited to 25 people), and we are thrilled to offer you
this wonderful journey of discovery and learning.
Please consider joining our ‘group within the group’ on
this marvelous cruise. We will enjoy
all of the onboard amenities and offshore excursions
offered by Viking River Cruises on this journey,.
Additionally, during on-board and on-ground presentations, Bob
and I will enrich our collective experience by sharing
much of our ‘learned wisdom’ about China, Chinese tea,
food and culture, quality arts & crafts, shopping and
negotiating for treasured objects.
We are still developing our materials and presentations,
but here is a short list of some of what we have in store
for you:
-
Chinese tea tastings and tea culture presentations –
learn to distinguish and brew Chinese tea like a pro
-
Chinese porcelain history and auspicious symbolism ( Jingdezhen
)
-
Introduction to Chinese Buddhism, Monasteries and A
Sacred Mt ( Jiu Hua)
-
Purchasing advice: what you will see for sale, what to buy
and where to buy it, how much to pay ( watch out for
fakes), shopping tips ( including purchasing tea and silk
items ) and when to buy and when to walk away
-
Wander with us through our favorite part of Shanghai and
if time allows, dine with us at our favorite restaurant
and visit a spectacular out-of-the-way-classical teahouse
Additionally, everyone in our group will receive a signed
copy of our book: The Story of Tea: A Cultural History and
Drinking Guide, which has been nominated for a 2008 James
Beard Foundation Book Award.
